How your PEM hall will safely withstand the next heavy rainfall

Heavy rainfall events have been increasing more and more recently. Buildings, especially their roofs and drainage systems, are heavily challenged during heavy rain. To ensure your roof withstands the next heavy rainfall without damage, the following points should be observed:

  • During heavy rainfall, the drains can no longer absorb the volume of water. This leads to temporary water accumulation on the roof. It is important that the building envelope is sealed and the structural integrity is maintained. Regular inspections ensure this.

  • Even with high-quality and professional installation, it is necessary from the first anniversary of the building, to inspect, maintain, and clean all drains, including all emergency overflows, at least once a year. Any possible roof vegetation must also be removed. Even if no water penetrates down to the hall floor, small cracks in the membrane or openings in the metal connections can lead to water ingress into the insulation layer. This can cause long-term damage such as mold growth and rot in the substructure and insulation material.

  • All retention basins and soakaways must be maintained in accordance with official regulations, to ensure the drainage of roof water during these heavy rainfall events and to prevent damage from flooding.

PEM Buildings offers annual roof maintenance as part of a maintenance contract to ensure the longevity of the operational building. If you are interested, please feel free to contact your PEM representative.
